And Now . . . Police In Thailand "Deputized" A Macaque To Help Improve Relations With Muslims

A few years ago, a police officer in southern Thailand found a monkey in the jungle with a broken arm. Specifically, it was a kind of monkey known as the macaque (--pronounced "muh-kock").

--So the cop brought the macaque home, gave him the name Santisuk, and nursed him back to health.

--Anyway, a few months ago, authorities in Thailand were looking for a way to improve relations with the country's Muslim population. Apparently, a lot of Thai Muslims were upset about the long lines at roadside checkpoints.

--So, the official solution was to dress up Santisuk the macaque monkey in a police uniform, and station him at a checkpoint in a predominantly Muslim part of the country.

--The hope was that he'd be so entertaining, travelers wouldn't mind the long holdups.
(--Who knew? All you really need to placate angry Muslims is macaque. HI-YO! Take a look at Santisuk here . . .)
